Discover Mana Island: A Family Escape in the Heart of the Fijian Islands
Mana Island is a true gem of the Fijian Islands, offering the perfect combination of adventure, relaxation, and culture for the whole family. Once you've experienced Mana, you'll find yourself skipping the mainland every time. Let me share why this island should be your next tropical getaway.
Why Mana Island?
Mana Island, with its world-class snorkeling and diving, is a slice of paradise that draws travelers from around the globe, many of whom journey over 40 hours just to experience its pristine beauty. For Aussies, this tropical escape is a quick 5-hour flight away, making it a fantastic destination for families and adventurers alike.
Getting There:
Fly directly into Nadi, Fiji. Depending on the ferry schedule, you may need to stay a night in Denarau, or if things line up perfectly, you can head straight to Mana. The ferry ride with South Sea Cruises is breathtaking from the moment you spot the Fiji Blue waters—an unforgettable aqua that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The ferry services most islands, and after-hours arrivals can be handled by water taxis.
Our Stay at Mana Island Resort & Spa
On this trip, we stayed at Mana Island Resort & Spa, courtesy of a Luxury Escapes package that included half-board, $500 resort credit, and flights from Adelaide—all for around $8K. (I can organize similar deals for you!)
Top Highlights of Mana Island:
1. The People
The warmth and spirit of the Fijian people make Mana Island truly special. The staff are fun-loving, soulful, and always up for a laugh. By the time we left, we were shedding tears, especially our 12-year-old, who formed incredible friendships with the activities staff. The genuine connection you’ll experience here is unforgettable.
2. Incredible Snorkeling
Snorkeling right off the beach is one of the island’s best features. Head out to the ledge for a safe and stunning snorkeling experience available whenever you like. With two beaches to choose from, you can always find a perfect spot to snorkel, no matter the tides.
3. Aqua-Trek Mana Must-Dos
The crew at Aqua-Trek Mana are absolute legends! The shark snorkel and turtle snorkel are must-do activities. Our kids (12 and 16 years) even did their intro scuba dives here, and we couldn’t have asked for better hands to guide them. These snorkeling trips are unforgettable and packed with marine life.
4. Survivor TV Show Fan?
Mana Island was a filming location for the Survivor TV show. If you’re a fan, take a morning run or walk, and you’ll spot and even touch some of the Survivor challenge sets scattered around the island.
5. Breathtaking Sunset Beach
One of our favorite experiences was the evening trip to Sunset Beach. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and take in the stunning Fijian sunsets.
6. Resort Spa & Kids Club
The resort spa is next level. The massages and treatments will leave you floating out of there, completely relaxed. And if you're traveling with kids, you’ll love the kids club. It runs all day and into the evening, with fun-loving, caring Fijian staff keeping the little ones entertained with laughter and activities.
7. Music and Entertainment
Mana Island is alive with music! While there’s scheduled entertainment every night, what we loved most was the spontaneous playing and singing you hear throughout the day. The island is full of musicians who bring so much joy with their music.
8. The Island Dogs
Mana Island is home to a few stray dogs that seem to belong to everyone. Although there are signs advising not to feed them, somehow they appear to be very well fed! They are friendly (can't vouch for all of them). The poor things are covered in Tiks so if you are heading there, taking some tik treatment for the poor itchy things. If the thought of stray dogs grosses you out, apologies but they are so sweet.
Things to Keep in Mind
1. Avoiding School Holidays
If possible, I recommend visiting Mana Island outside of school holidays. During busy times, the resort can get crowded, and securing a spot by the pool can require an early start. If you enjoy a more laid-back atmosphere, avoid peak holiday periods. But if you love the energy of a bustling resort, school holidays could be just the thing for you.
2. Big Resort, Big Logistics
Mana Island Resort & Spa has about 150 rooms, so during peak times, the kitchen, laundry, and housekeeping staff have a lot to manage. Sometimes there may be delays with fresh towels or meal service, but the buffet is always a great option with fresh ingredients and live cooking stations. A special shout-out to Tevita, who makes the most amazing omelettes. Every morning, there’s a big line for his delicious creations, and he always greets each person with a smile, patience, and kindness. Tevita, you are amazing! Be prepared for busier periods if you're traveling during school holidays.
3. Room Glitch, Quickly Fixed
We had a small hiccup with our room assignment, as our 16-year-old daughter ended up sleeping on what we a thought was sofa bed, which actually wasn't even a bed #mumfail. However, the staff were quick to resolve the issue, and within a few hours, a proper single bed was delivered to our room.
